How to Replace & Clean Keycaps
(Without Damaging Your Precious Keyboard)
Congrats on your brand-new (artisan) keycaps! Before you go full caveman with your fingernails: pause right there. In this guide, we walk you through the proper, damage-free swapping and safe cleaning techniques step-by-step.
Why You Should NEVER Yank Keycaps Off By Hand
We get it. Your package just arrived, the artisan looks stunning, and you want it on your board now. Pulling by hand applies uneven lateral torque to a tiny 4mm plastic stem. Here are the disasters you risk:
Snapped Switch Stem
The plastic cross snaps clean off inside your keycap socket. RIP switch.
Bent Stabilizer Wire
On larger keys, you pull the wire out of its housing, creating an eternal rattle.
Scratched Keycap Walls
Fingernails or screwdrivers will gouge your matte PBT and resin surfaces.
Wire Puller vs. Plastic Ring: Which Tool to Choose?
The difference between a buttery smooth swap and a damaged keycap comes down to selecting the proper tool:
Wire Keycap Puller (Stainless Steel)
Two flexible wires that wrap under the keycap corners. 100% scratch-free with balanced vertical upward pull.

Rigid plastic edges clip tightly on key walls, risking scratches on custom PBT and resin finishes.

Unplug Your Keyboard
Disconnect the cable or turn off Bluetooth to prevent spamming your chat channels.
Seat the Puller Diagonally
Slip the wires down the sides and rotate diagonally so the wires catch opposite corners under the base.
Pull Straight Upward (Vertical Lift)
Pull straight up with steady force. Never twist. You will hear a clean, satisfying *pop*.
Mind the Stabilizers on Big Keys
Keys larger than 2u (Spacebar, Shifts) have stabilizer wires. Gently alternate pulling left and right.
Mount Your New (Artisan) Keycap
Align the cross-stem socket with the switch and press down firmly with your thumb.
How to Clean Keycaps Safely Without Damage
Over time, keycaps accumulate dust, oils, and grime. Here is the safest way to restore them:
1. Lukewarm Water & Mild Soap
Soak keycaps in lukewarm water (under 40ยฐC) with a drop of gentle dish soap for 15 minutes. Wipe clean with a soft microfiber cloth.
2. No Boiling Water or Alcohol
Never use boiling water (warps plastic stems permanently) and avoid harsh rubbing alcohol/acetone (damages resin clear coats!).
3. Air Dry 24 Hours (Upside Down)
Place keycaps on a clean towel with the stem socket facing downward. Allow 24 hours of drying before reinstalling.
