Keycap Profiles Explained:
Cherry vs. OEM vs. XDA vs. SA & MOA
Ever wondered why some keyboards feel like a 1970s IBM typewriter while others feel sleek and snappy like a modern laptop? The secret is in the keycap profile (the height, curvature, and angle of the keys). In this guide, you’ll learn the differences between the most popular profiles, what an R4 key is, and which profile best suits your typing style.
The Two Main Families: Sculpted vs. Uniform
Before diving into individual profile names, keycaps are grouped into two primary design architectures:
1. Sculpted Profiles (OEM, Cherry, SA)
Each row of keys features an individual height and angle. From top to bottom, the keycaps form a natural concave bowl that mirrors the arc of your fingers.
- ✅ Optimal Ergonomics: Minimal finger travel during long typing sessions
- ✅ Instant Orientation: Tactile feedback of which row your finger rests on
- ⚠️ Keys cannot be randomly swapped between row 1 and row 4
2. Uniform Profiles (XDA, DSA, MOA)
Every single keycap across the entire board shares the exact same height and shape, creating a completely flat, minimalist typing surface.
- ✅ 100% Modular: Place any keycap on any row without uneven heights
- ✅ Broad Contact Area: Generous flat key tops
- ⚠️ Requires slight adjustment if you are used to sculpted curves
The 5 Most Popular Profiles Compared
1. OEM Profile (The Industry Standard)
Height: ~11.9 mm (R4)The most common sculpted profile. Nearly all pre-built gaming keyboards (Corsair, Razer, Ducky, Keychron) ship with OEM keycaps by default. Offers balanced comfort and a familiar sculpted curve.
2. Cherry Profile (Gamer & Enthusiast Favorite) ⭐
Height: ~9.4 mm (R4)Similar to OEM but slightly lower in height. The lower center of gravity reduces wrist fatigue and creates a crisper, more direct keypress. The standard for premium custom PBT sets.
3. XDA Profile (Flat, Wide & Clean)
Height: ~9.0 mm (Uniform)A uniform profile with broad, gently rounded tops. Loved for clean retro aesthetics and custom layouts (65%, 75%, and Alice keyboards).
4. SA Profile (Tall, Vintage & Deep Thock)
Height: ~16.5 mm (R4)Tall, spherical keycaps reminiscent of classic 1970s IBM terminals. The massive acoustic chamber produces a uniquely deep, bassy “Thock”.
5. MOA / MDA Profile (Soft & Rounded)
Height: ~9.8 mm (Uniform)A modern uniform design featuring pillowy rounded edges and soft concave indentations. Feels delightfully comfortable under fingertips.
If your PCB features North-facing switch LEDs, Cherry-profile keycaps on Row 3 (ASDF) can slightly collide with the switch housing. When in doubt, opt for OEM or XDA profiles, or switches with long stem poles!
Because all key rows in XDA and MOA share uniform flat height, touch typing may feel unfamiliar for the first few sessions. Allow 3 to 5 days to adapt to the flat surface area.
Cast your own custom artisan keycaps in any profile with precise MX-cross stem stems.

What is an “R4 / Row 4” Keycap? (And why Artisans belong here)
