Keycap Size & Profile Guide
Everything you need to know about keycap profiles, row heights, unit sizes (1u–6.25u), and mechanical keyboard compatibility.
1. Understanding Keycap Profiles & Row Heights
The profile of a keycap defines its shape, height, and slant across the rows of your keyboard. Profiles are broadly categorized into Sculpted (varying heights per row for optimal ergonomic typing) and Uniform (flat, identical height across all rows).
Cherry Profile
The enthusiast gold standard. Lower sculpted height with a gentle cylindrical curve for rapid, comfortable typing and a deep acoustic sound.
OEM Profile
The most common factory profile found on standard pre-built mechanical keyboards. Slightly taller than Cherry with pronounced sculpt rows.
SA & XDA Profiles
SA: High-profile vintage spherical shape with a rich sound. XDA: Flat, uniform height popular for custom layouts and novelty accent keys.
2. Keycap Sizes & Unit Dimensions (1u – 6.25u)
Mechanical keyboard keys are measured in “Units” (u), where 1u is the exact width of a standard alphanumeric key (such as A, Z, 1, or Escape). Modifiers and spacebars are proportional multiples of 1u.
| Key Type | Unit Size | Typical Keyboard Positions |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Key / Artisan | 1u (19.05 mm) | Alphanumerics, F-Row, Escape, NumPad Numbers |
| Bottom Row Modifiers | 1.25u | Ctrl, Win, Alt, Menu (Standard ANSI bottom row) |
| Tab / Caps Lock | 1.5u / 1.75u | Tab (1.5u), Caps Lock (1.75u), Right Shift on 65%/75% |
| Backspace / Enter | 2u / 2.25u | Backspace (2u), ANSI Enter (2.25u), Left Shift (2.25u) |
| Right Shift (ANSI) | 2.75u | Standard full-size / TKL Right Shift |
| Standard Spacebar | 6.25u (118.7 mm) | Standard spacebar for 95% of mechanical keyboards |
3. Switch Stem Compatibility
All keycaps and artisan keys sold on KeycapStore are designed for MX-style cross stems (+). This includes switches made by Cherry, Gateron, Kailh, Outemu, Akko, TTC, Durock, and any clone switches featuring the cross stem pattern.
Quick Artisan Compatibility Tip
Unless specified otherwise, single artisan keycaps (e.g. Pokémon, Demon Slayer, Dumpling, Frieren) are standard 1u size. They are most commonly installed on the Escape (Esc) key, the top Function row (F1–F12), or navigation cluster keys.
